About Us
At Soar, we are proud to serve as the designated Area Director for Area 8 in South Carolina within the Special Olympics network. While our affiliation with Special Olympics provides valuable resources, support, and recognition, we recognize the importance of fostering sustainability and creating tailored programs for our local community. Through strategic planning, community engagement, and dedicated fundraising efforts, we have worked tirelessly to cultivate a sustainable framework for our programs, rooted in the principles of empowerment and inclusion. Our partnership with Special Olympics remains invaluable, providing us with guidance, inspiration, and a shared vision for creating a more inclusive society.
Our Journey
In 2016, Kathy Cramer, a dedicated special education teacher, saw a need for recreational opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities in the Lowcountry. Starting with 53 athletes, Soar has grown into a vibrant community serving over 450 athletes across Beaufort and Jasper Counties. The recognition of Special Olympics as a school sport by Beaufort County and Jasper County marked a significant milestone in our journey. This designation not only facilitated transportation during the school day but also opened doors for after-school participation, mirroring the opportunities presented in traditional sports.

Our mission is to enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities by providing Special Olympics sports and recreational activities.
Our vision is to create an inclusive community, where all individuals with intellectual disabilities are valued and empowered and where every person has the opportunity to engage in a healthy, active lifestyle through sports.
Our Team's Values
Through respect, we seek to ensure that people with and without intellectual disabilities treat each other with appreciation and dignity. We are committed to fostering a community of equality where individuals with intellectual disabilities are valued members, deserving of the same rights, opportunities, and dignity as everyone else. We live the Special Olympic Oath : “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” We are capable, tenacious and resilient. We don’t give up on ourselves or each other.
